DescriptionThis travel poster initialled WB, was commissioned by the Queensland Government Tourist Bureau to promote Lindeman Island in the Whitsundays, as a carefree island holiday destination through agencies in Sydney , Melbourne and Brisbane. The poster design evokes feelings of freedom, sunshine and beach fun, and uses bold colour and persuasive language to attract potential tourists.HistoryDestinations were central themes to most travel posters commissioned by the Australian National Travel Association and Victorian Railways and featured popular and iconic locations. The winter migration of tourists from Victoria and New South Wales to the warmer climate of Queensland proved a lucrative market. The Great Barrier Reef was a cornerstone of Queensland tourism and in the 1930s coastal steamers offered passage to the Whitsundays including Lindeman and Hayman Islands. In 1907 the Queensland Government Intelligence and Tourist Bureau was established as a sub-department of the Chief Secretary's Office, after various name changes in 1945-1946 the board became known as the Queensland Government Tourist Bureau. The primary focus of the Tourist Bureau was the promotion of tourism within Australia and it was responsible for producing brochures, encouraging improved standards in accommodation and service and providing a subsidy scheme to aid in the promotion of local areas. SignificanceThis poster reflects early tourist promotions of the Whitsunday Islands and the Barrier Reef at a time when access was by coastal steamer and tourist accommodation was on a modest scale.
