DescriptionThe Italian passenger and cargo vessel VIMINALE is shown at the F & S Buoy Neutral Bay on Sunday morning 26 March 1933. This image was captured from a ferry travelling between Mosman and Circular Quay via Cremorne, Sydney. In 1933 VIMINALE was operating for the Italia Line transporting passengers between Genoa, Freemantle, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.HistoryVIMINALE was a 8,657 ton Italian passenger and cargo vessel built in 1925 by San Rocci Cn at San Rocco, Italy. Between 1930 and 1932 it was operating on the passenger run between Genoa, Italy and Australia for Lloyd Sabaudo and Navigazione Generale Italiana. In 1943 VIMINALE was attacked by British warships and air planes near Cape Vaticano and sunk.SignificanceThis photograph is part of the F G Wilkinson Photograph Collection, comprising more than 700 glass plate negatives of ships in Sydney Harbour between 1919 and 1936. The collection provides an extensive and well-documented coverage of the changing styles of shipping in the port of Sydney before the gradual decline of the coastal trade, and in a period which was probably the peak reached by commercial shipping in Australia. The backgrounds also reveal the changing face of the city and harbour foreshores.
