DescriptionThe Danish vessel STJERNEBORG is shown at No 2 Athol Bight on Sunday 31 December 1933. This image was captured from the 9.30am ferry travelling from Taronga to Circular Quay, Sydney.HistorySTJERNEBORG was a twin-screw cargo and passenger vessel of 4,551 tons built in 1929 by Akt Burmeister & Wain at Copenhagen. In 1933 it was owned by A/S D/S Dannebrog and registered in Copenhagen under a Danish flag. It was hit by torpedoes from a German submarine on the 12th of May 1942 and sunk while carrying supplies for British forces to Egypt.SignificanceThis photograph is part of the F G Wilkinson Photograph Collection, comprising more than 700 glass plate negatives of ships in Sydney Harbour between 1919 and 1936. The collection provides an extensive and well-documented coverage of the changing styles of shipping in the port of Sydney before the gradual decline of the coastal trade, and in a period which was probably the peak reached by commercial shipping in Australia. The backgrounds also reveal the changing face of the city and harbour foreshores.
