DescriptionThis 9'10'' longboard was made in Victoria by George Rice in 1965. The polyurathane foam core board has a single wood stringer with light blue and maroon stripes, a blue fin, and a diamond logo with the text 'George Rice'.HistoryGeorge Rice was an early commercial board maker in Victoria, active in the 1950s and 1960s. He produced quality Malibu surfboards under his own label, and in partnership with fellow Victorian board maker Vic Tantau. His boards were used by prominent Victorian based surfers who later founded the surfboard and surf wear companies Piping Hot and Rip Curl.SignificanceThis fiberglass board provides an important record of trends in board manufacture and shaping, and is representative of boards made by Victorian shaper Geoerge Rice in the 1960s.
