DescriptionThis medallion featuring the USCG barque EAGLE was issued to commemorate the Coast Guard's visit to Australia during the 1988 Australian Bicentennial celebrations.HistoryThe USCG EAGLE is a 90-metre (295-foot) barque used as a training cutter for future officers of the United States Coast Guard. Australia celebrated its bicentennial with a parade of tall ships on Sydney Harbour with the EAGLE representing the USA. Its voyage to Australia and back took eight months and, during that period, training was conducted for the 280 cadets who were embarked for the two phases of the cruise. Courses included meteorology and physical oceanography and EAGLE served as a platform for a number of projects such as weather and marine mammal observations, plankton tows, and sea-surface pH measurements. SignificanceThis simple commemorative medallion marks the EAGLE's visit to Sydney for Australia's bicentennial of white settlement.
