At the time of its construction the IRON PACIFIC was the largest twin screw dry cargo bulk carrier in the world and the largest ship to operate in BHP's fleet. It was launched on 1 February 1986. It is fitted with nine cargo holds. It was the largest vessel to enter Sydney Harbour when it berthed at the Sydney Cove Passenger Terminal for public inspection on 15 July 1986.
BHP operated the ship on the 'triangulation' pattern of carrying iron ore from Port Hedland to Newcastle and Port Kembla, coal from the east coast ports to South Korea, then ballast to Port Hedland. The ship set records in all its regular loading ports.
BHP has been a major Australian shipowner since the 1920s, and during the 1940s and 1950s was also a major shipbuilder at Whyalla, South Australia. Until the 1970s its shipping operations serviced only its own coastal requirements to carry materials for its steelmaking industry, but it then expanded into overseas trade.SignificanceThis model is an example of leading Australian ship building techniques and design.
