HistoryThe barque KING OSCAR was struck and damaged by a 'large bull sperm whale' on 15 December 1871 off Cape Howe, during a voyage from Hobart to Newcastle. The artist had little knowledge of whales depicting the 'monster' with two spouts, a dorsal fin, and a vertical tail fluke, while failing to show the characteristic square head of the sperm whale.
