DescriptionAn engraving titled 'Iles Sandwich - Costume Militarie' depicting an Hawaiian man in military uniform. He wears a feather covered cape and helmet, carries a spear and is tattooed on his chest and left leg. Beneath the title is the text reference for the plate 'Voy. Autour du Monde. Beechey. p. 340', Voyage Autour du Monde, Captain Frederick William Beechey, in the multi-volume work 'Bibliothèque universelle des voyages, effectués par mer ou par terre dans les diverses parties du monde ...' by Albert Étienne de Montémont.HistoryThis plate is from 'Bibliothèque universelle des voyages, effectués par mer ou par terre dans les diverses parties du monde, depuis les premières découvertes jusqu'a nos jours' by Albert Étienne de Montémont, published by Armand-Aubrée, Paris 1833. Volumes 1 - 21 are subtitled 'Voyages Autour de Monde'. The plate is from the account of the voyage of Frederick William Beechey (1796 - 1856) in the Pacific. Captain Beechey published his account of the voyage in 1831 as 'Narrative of a Voyage to the Pacific and Berings Strait to Co-operate with the Polar Expeditions, 1825-1828'.
SignificanceOne of eleven costume studies of South Seas' and East Indies' islanders from de Freycinet's circumnavigation account 'Voyage autour du monde' (1817-20) This image of a tattooed warrior from the Mariana Islands reflects European interest in Pacific ethnography during the 19th century.
