DescriptionHandwritten diary attributed to passenger Edward Warner on voyage from Melbourne to London on the sailing ship RENOWN, 15 August to 28 November 1876. The manuscript begins inside the cover with initial text reading : "Log of the ship RENOWN With the crew 53 passengers 49 bound to London".HistoryEdward Warner was born in England in 1852 and migrated to Australia with his family soon after. In 1876 he was on board the RENOWN sailing back to England presumably to visit relatives or perhaps to find work. He wrote a diary of this voyage which is lively and well written, although there is little punctuation. His diary includes weather and navigational details as well as the more important reports of shipboard life. SignificanceShipboard accounts of this kind are relatively scarce as it includes everyday life on board the vessel, from card game nights to rat catching.
