DescriptionThis pair of men's boardshorts from Rip Curl's 2000 range follow the trend towards Hawaiian floral fabric patterns. The polyester 'Oceanic' print includes stylised hibiscus flowers, stars and palm leaves. Designed for surfers, a wax comb is attached with a nylon cord to the rear back pocket.HistoryDuring the 1960s boardshorts were generally associated with beach sports, like surfing and wakeboarding. They have since grown in popularity as casual everyday wear in Australia and North America. Designed to be durable and quick drying they are usually made from polyester or nylon.
Wax combs are used on surfboards for scraping off old or excess wax and distributing it over the board. The wax is needed on surfboards so the rider's feet have some traction on the board's surface.SignificanceThese boardshorts are a representative example of Australian beachwear designs from the early 2000's designed and manufactured by Rip Curl.
