DescriptionA black and white photograph by David Iacono of a Samoan man wearing a patterned lavalava and crouching beside a dead pig.HistoryThe pig plays an important part of Samoan life. Not only do they provide the principal source of meat for Samoans but they represent prestige and security, a sign of wealth that is highly valued.
Pigs are eaten widely at festivals, weddings and used as food offerings at ceremonies. They are killed by strangulation to reduce blood loss and are cooked immediately after.SignificanceThis photograph is part of a series of images taken by David Iacono that depict the traditional landscape and lifestyle of the Pacific Island of Samoa. Iacono attempts to capture the reality of Samoan life rather than that experienced by tourists of expatriates.
