DescriptionA linocut by Alick Tipoti titled Koedal Kazil Gar Yatharmik (Crocodile Protecting its Young). It shows a large crocodile
protecting its five young offspring on a background of intricately carved designs.
HistoryAlick Tipoti is guided in his work by the traditional cultural practices of his people, he sees his responsibility to document the stories, genealogies, songs, and other aspects of his culture so that it is available for future generations to learn, understand and practice.
'Garr Yatharmik' is an ancient yet important phrase in Mabuyag that literally means 'tying it close to the body', in other words to protect. People of Zenadh Kes (Torres Strait Islands) are instructed and taught the ways of their culture by their ancestors, who were in turn instructed by their forefathers. Tipoti chose the Koedal (crocodile) because it is a totem from the dinosaur age, so it represents the ancient laws of his forefathers.SignificanceThe Koedal (crocodile) is Alick Tipoti's totem and is a significant animal in Torres Strait Island culture.
