DescriptionThis sketch of a bucket dredger is a rare example of a work vessel and highlights Frank Norton's abiding interest in, and aptitude for, maritime subjects.HistoryDredging is normally undertaken to keep waterways clear of obstructions and therefore navigable; however, they can also be used for maritime construction, mining and harvesting.
The bucket dredger is one of the oldest forms of dredging. It is constructed with a pontoon with a well in the middle for the ladder of buckets to move through, and connected to a barge. The bucket picks up the material off the bottom and transports it back to the top of the ladder where it is dumped into chutes that lead to the barge for disposal. Used correctly, it can be hightly accurate in achieving required depth and length.SignificanceThe drawing represents dredges and harbour works during the 20th century.
