DescriptionThis lithograph originates from a twenty two chromolithograph work entitled the 'New South Wales Album' which was prepared by brilliant lithographic draftsman and artist Robert Wendel. It was published in Sydney by Troedel & Co. in 1878. It depicts Georges Head, Sydney as it would have appeared during this period (together with part of its fortifications).HistoryThis lithograph originates from a twenty two chromolithograph work entitled the 'New South Wales Album' which was prepared by brilliant lithographic draftsman and artist Robert Wendel. It was published in Sydney by Troedel & Co. in 1878. In a way the 'New South Wales Album' formed a fitting sequel to the 'Melbourne Album'; a collection of twenty four lithographs, the production of which was overseen by German-born lithographer Charles Trödel in 1863. In 1865, Trödel issued a series of twelve chromolithographs by Nicholas Chevalier, for which he was awarded a medal at the 1866 Melbourne Intercolonial Exhibition for having 'successfully introduced chromolithography to Victoria.' He later founded Troedel & Co. and spent a period of time in Sydney, where this particular work was produced. SignificanceThis lithograph represents a relatively accurate and, therefore, invaluable artistic portrait of Georges Head, Sydney as it would have appeared circa. 1878. It is a highly useful artefact and source that is well worth consulting with regard to Sydney's colonial and military history.
