DescriptionA Turnbull Deluxe brand face mask. This face mask was used as part a diving suit worn by Albert Mervyn Olsen in the 1960's as part of his work with the CSIRO Department of Fisheries in Tasmania and South Australia.HistoryThe development of the diving mask was an essential component in the evolution of the modern diving suit. Not just for vison but the design of the mask was significant in allowing the diver to equalize their ears and allow them to go deeper. This single lens mask is an example of the earlier diver masks where there is a rubber seal for the whole face and two rubber ridges for the nose. The nose allowance was a new development for masks and first made its appearance in the late 1950s. This mask was used by Albert 'Mick' Olsen Used for a period of 19 years during his research work with the CSIRO Division of Fisheries. This work included studying rock lobsters and scallops in Tasmania, kelp beds off north-east Tasmania and supervising staff in South Australian research studies. SignificanceThis diver’s mask represents the mid-way development of the divers mask. While still featuring a single lens and rubber skirting, there are nostril ridges which began allowing the diver block the nose and equalize the ears.
