DescriptionThis photograph album contains thirty seven silver gelatin prints of the Prince Alfred Yacht Club Regatta held in December 1895. It contains images of naval ships, schooners, views of the harbour from Farm Cove to the Botanical Gardens and Bennelong Point, and ferries from the event held at Farm Cove, Sydney. Vessels competing include BRONZEWING, FLYING FISH, CORINA, and RACINE.HistoryRegattas were central to competitive boating in the 19th century and functioned as a social and sporting event, as well as a marker of official anniversaries in a public aquatic spectacle. Civic leaders, politicians and merchants offered patronage and sponsorship. This community regatta often featured several races, including rowing, sculling and sailing events usually for professional watermen and amateurs. The Prince Alfred Yacht Club is believed to have been first established on 15 October 1867 and received its Royal designation in 1911. It is located at Green Point, Newport on Sydney's northern beaches. On the 14 December 1895 the club held a regatta for a variety of sailing and rowing vessels. The Commodore Samuel Hordern was in command of the steam yacht BRONZEWING on the day and was accompanied by the flagship ALATHEA.SignificanceThis photograph album provides a record of sailing and yachting on Sydney Harbour in the late 19th century.
