DescriptionThis pair of cream leather women's shoes was made by the South Australian shoe manufacturer Eklipsan in the 1910s. The Oxford-style brogue features a Louis heel, a rounded toe, and decorative punch-pattern edging on the toe cap and around the lace up front.
This narrower style of the shoe was popular in the Victorian and Edwardian periods, as an indicator of breeding and gentility. The leather inner sole is inscribed with 'The Eklips 'All' awarded gold medal' and 'made in Adelaide'.
HistoryWomen increasingly actively participated in sport and leisure activities throughout the twentieth century. Leather sports shoes worn during the Edwardian era often juxtaposed menswear-inspired detailing and feminine high heels.SignificanceThis Australian made pair of shoes is a rare example of ladies footwear fashions worn during the Edwardian era.
