The RUTLAND is believed to be leaving Port Philip heads, Victoria, under the command of Captain H A Gardner.HistoryThe 1,112 ton three-masted RUTLAND was built in East Boston in 1859. The ship was registered in Boston as of 1869 but by 1872 had been sold to a T Barrass of Newcastle, England.SignificanceThis painting of the RUTLAND represents the sailing ships used in trade between Australia and America in the late 1800s - particularly in the trade of timber and coal between Newcastle, New South Wales and San Francisco, California.
