DescriptionThis Second Class ticket for passage on board the Orient-Royal Mail Line OMRAH from London (Tilbury) to Sydney was issued to Mrs Linton and her infant son at a cost of £50 12 shillings (£50/12/-). The ticket contains a notice to all passengers and a list of the Australian ports on the route, 'Fremantle, Adelaide (Semaphore), Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane'. The reverse contains a list of the conditions of the ticket and restrictions on excess luggage.HistoryOMRAH was a passenger liner of 8,130 ton built at Fairfield shipyard in Glasgow for the Orient Line in 1899. It could accommodate 175 first-class, 175 second-class and 500 third-class passengers. OMRAH was requisitioned during World War I by the Australian Commonwealth government to carry troops until February 1915 when it was given back to the Orient Line. Once again in June 1917 the vessel was taken over by the government for war services. On 10 May 1918 it was torpedoed and sunk near Cape Spartivento (Italy).SignificanceThis Orient-Royal Mail Line passenger ticket was issued while the Orient Line was undergoing considerable change as a result of its new partnership with The Royal Mail Steam Packet Company. Although the partnership only lasted three years, it reflected the innovation and change on the England-Australia run at the turn of the century.
