DescriptionA third class passenger ticket to Australia purchased by or for the fifteen year old George Brownie to travel from London to Sydney aboard the SS ORUBA leaving on the 10th of August 1894. Purchased for 16 pounds and 16 shillings from 'Thomas Cook and Sons, Tourist and Shipping Agents 13 July 1894, Birmingham'.HistoryThe ORUBA was built in 1889 by Vickers - Armstrong’s in Barrow for the Orient - Pacific Line. She was a single screw steamer with two funnels, four masts and accommodation for 126-1st, 120-2nd and 400-3rd class passengers. In 1906, with the other Pacific Steam Navigation Co ships, she was bought by the Royal Mail Steam Packet Co. and was changed to their colour. continued on the Australia service until Oct 16th 1908 when she commenced her last sailing to Australia. ORUBA was then placed on Royal Mail Steam Packet's service to Buenos Aires. Purchased by the British Admiralty in 1914, she was rebuilt to represent the battleship, HMS ORION. ORUBA was scuttled at Mudros Harbour, Lemnos Island, Greece as a breakwater in 1915.
