HistoryAn Andy Land hook was considered the best kind of baling hook because of its balance and comfort. Andy Land, who made the hooks in the 1930s and 1940s, used the pins from Pyrmont railway sleepers. His hooks were recognisable from the brass piece on the handle which shined from constant use. Andy Land hooks were so treasured they were normally given to younger waterside workers rather than discarded.
The hand held hooks were used to life wool bales and drag out bags from the hull. Every wharfie had to supply his own and carry it to work everyday.c 1950
