DescriptionThis French automaton clock in the style of a lighthouse contains an eight-day movement with a cylinder escapement, an aneroid barometer and two thermometers, connected to a further movement in the base. This movement causes the silvered turret of the lighthouse to revolve when wound. The lighthouse tower is engraved to resemble brickwork and has four silver coloured windows and a door, and a handrail guard around the turret.HistoryNovelty clocks became popular on the late 1800's as parts became cheaper to produce and the market. The period 1860 to 1910 is known as "The Golden Age of Automata" and Paris was particularly well known as makers of this type of creations which included the production of automaton clocks. SignificanceThis maritime-themed automaton is a fine example of the ingenious and novel mantle clocks made by French clock manufacturers in the late 19th century.
