The full title of the map is 'A new chart of the Pacific Ocean exhibiting the western coast of America Cape Horn to Berings Strait, the eastern shores of Asia including Japan, China and Australia and all the numerous islands and known dangers situated in Polynesia and Australia, correctly drawn and regulated according to the most approved and modern surveys and astronomical observations by J.W. Norie hydrographer'.
Several courses have been plotted on the map by Captain William Ellison on the whalers: MARCIA port of departure New Bedford, destination North West Coast duration 1847 - 1850; LEVI STARBUCK port of departure New Bedford, destination North Pacific duration 1850 - 1853; WILLIAM ROTCH [Wm rotch] port of departure New Bedford, destination Indian Ocean duration 1856 - 1860.
