DescriptionAccommodation plans for Orient Line ships on the Orient Line Australia service. The plan at top of the page depicts the berths in the 1st Saloon and 2nd Saloon cabins on the SS POTOSI. The plan at the bottom of the page shows the 1st Saloon and 2nd Saloon cabins of the SS GARONNE, LUSITANIA, CHIMBORAZO and CUZCO.HistoryThe Orient Line (Orient Steam Navigation Company) sent its first steamer, the SS LUSITANIA, on the Australia run in 1877. Her successful arrival proved that steamships could manage such an epic voyage. The Orient Line then proceeded to charter other steamships CHIMBORAZO, CUZCO and GARONNE to supplement their trade and were awardeda partial mail contract in 1883 by the Australian government. Later, they were able to alternate departure dates with their competitor P & O and by 1890 Orient Line had 11 steamships under their banner including SS POTOSI who sailed the Australia service from 1880-1887.
SignificanceThe Orient Line (Orient Steam Navigation Company Limited) was a primary provider, along with P & O, for the trade and immigration route between Australia and England. Their vessels GARONNE, LUSITANIA, CHIMBORAZO and CUZCO, were the first of the Orient Line ships to embark on this route and were the "backbone" of the company in the early years.
