DescriptionA handwritten letter, dated 26 January 1991, from Brendan Jackson to his father whilst Brendan was serving aboard HMAS SYDNEY IV.HistoryHMAS SYDNEY IV is an Adelaide Class guided missle frigate (FFG). This is the fourth ship to carry the name SYDNEY and is the inheritor of eight "battle honours", more than any othe RAN unit. HMAS SYDNEY IV was commissioned in 1980 and it is planned that she will be decommsioned in late 2015 and be replaced with a Hobart class destroyer. During her service HMAS SYDNEY IV was deployed to the Persian Gulf on five occasions during the Gulf War, War in Afghanistan, and the 2003 invasion of Iraq. SYDNEY has also completed at least two round-the-world voyages. Brendan Jackson joined the Royal Australian Navy as a junior recruit on 6 October 1981 at the age of sixteen. He commenced his naval career at the Navy Training Base HMAS Leettwin and went on to train as a meteorologist and navigator. Brendan served in numerous vessels and is particularly enthusiastic about his service in the Royal Australian Navy.SignificanceHMAS SYDNEY IV was posted to the Persian Gulf for the first time in December 1990 where it remained as part of Australia's contribution to the Gulf War until March 1991.
HMAS SYDNEY IV was awarded the Meritorious Unit Citation on 4 November 1991 for this deployment, and later received the battle honour "Kuwait".
