DescriptionThis archive collection is made up of written material collected by Brendan Jackson while he was serving in the Royal Australian Navy. It includes 15 Daily Orders for HMAS SYDNEY; nine newsletters; eight letters written by Brendan Jackson to his parents; six stickers relating to the Navy, HMAS SYDNEY and Desert Storm; programs and invitations for ship concerts and ceremonies; Christmas greeting cards and a menu for a Christmas dinner; and other printed material.HistoryBrendan Jackson joined the Royal Australian Navy as a junior recruit on 6 October 1981 at the age of sixteen. He commenced his naval career at the Navy Training Base HMAS LEEUWIN where he continued his secondary schooling, after which he completed a Category Training Course as a Meteorologist/ Navigators Yeoman aboard HMAS ALBATROSS. Between 1983 and 1991 Jackson served in a range of Royal Australian Navy vessels, including HMA Ships TORRENS, OTWAY, CANBERRA and SYDNEY.SignificanceThis collection of written material outlines the experiences of Brendan Jackson during his service in the Royal Australian Navy, and reflects late 20th century naval culture.
