DescriptionThis archive series consists of personal papers collected by Miss Elsie Jackson during her voyage from Sydney to London on board the Orient Liner ORONTES in 1931. It includes three tickets, three photographs of ORONTES sailing for London as seen from the dock, two newspaper clippings and one typed suggested itinerary for travels in the south of England.HistoryMrs Elsie Ashdown (nee Jackson) (1888-1975) undertook two cruises from Sydney to London over the course of 25 years. During her first voyage from Sydney to London in 1931, Elsie travelled third class on the Orient liner ORONTES via Cairo and the Suez Canal. After a week-long English tour, Elsie took an overland trip through Europe, followed by a second cruise on ORONTES to Norway and the northern capitals. Elsie returned to Sydney via Canada and the Americas. In 1956, travelling under her married name, Elsie undertook a second voyage on the Orient line to London, South Africa, South America and around the coast of Australia to Fremantle, Adelaide, Melbourne, Tasmania and back to Sydney.
