Samuel Calvert

BiographySamuel Calvert was born in London on the 21 November, 1828. He was the son of resepected engraver Edwards Calvert who taught his three sons the art of drawing, etching and engraving from a young age. Samuel migrated to Australia in 1848 and settled in South Australia with his older brothers, John and William Calvert.

Samuel Calvert worked in Adelaide on various publications until 1852 when he moved to Melbourne and continued worlking as a wood engraver for various commissions including books, magazines and alamancs. He had a short peroid of engraving and printing the postage stamps for Victoria but this ended in a declaration of bankrupcy in 1859. Samuel seems to have kept a low until 1867 when he began a new commercial enterprise as an engraver with his son William. He returned to England permantly in 1904 and died in 1913.

While Sameul Calvert is most widely known as an engraver for newspapers and magazines, he exhibited his work extensively and won many awards. He served on art boards, painted oil and water colour scenes and also produced a range of children's books.
