DescriptionAn illustration from a book titled 'Nelle Bibliotheque des Voyages Tome 2. plate 8'. The plate is titled 'Les marins partagent leur peche avec les naturels des bords de la riviere Endeavour' [The sailors share their catch of fish with the natives of Endeavour river].
The Spanish translation appears above the image at top centre 'La tripulacion rinda a los barbaros con su pesca'.
HistoryAlthough James Cook was British and led a British expedition to the south, he was admired throughout Europe - despite long standing naval and colonial rivalries. The French king Louis XVI, saw Cook's Pacific voyages as an impetus to mount a French expedition under la Perouse. Both countries embraced the ideals upheld by the proponents of the Enlightenment and accounts of voyages were translated into both English and French. Readers across the channel read stories with eagerness and illustrations enhanced the tales of distant lands and other peoples.
SignificanceAn insight into how episodes in the life of James Cook took on an international aspect, transforming in the process the original descriptions. Here, for example is a French version of scenes at the Endeavour River.
