DescriptionThis photograph of five skiffs in a weekly race on Sydney Harbour. Captured on the far left is ARLINE, second from the left is BRITANNIA, third from the left is MASCOTTE and at the end of the row on the right is H.C.PRESS. The skiffs are in a close race and in proximity to a few other competing skiffs.History18ft. skiff racing was an entertaining sport for spectators. Its origins are attributed to Mark Foy and a group of businessmen who founded the Sydney Flying Yacht Squadron, reportedly established on 19 October 1891. BRITANNIA and its skipper Georgie Robinson were prominent figures in 18ft. skiff racing between the two world wars.
