DescriptionThis builder's model of MV MONGOLIA was made in Copenhagen by Burmeister and Wain around 1945. On the ship's bow is a red circle containing a lazy fouled anchor. The words 'MONGOLIA / Kobenhavn' appears on the stern, and the house flag flies from the mizzen mast.HistoryThe cargo vessel MV MONGOLIA was launched in 1941 and completed in 1945 for the East Asiatic Company (Det Østasiatiske Kompagni) of Copenhagen, Denmark.
At 8,366 tons, MONGOLIA was part of a fleet of more than 20 vessels operating through the 1950s to 1970s, primarily between Scandinavia and the Far East. MONGOLIA carried vegetable oil and latex and visited Australia and New Zealand on a number of occasions. In 1969 MONGOLIA was sold to Panam and renamed BLUE SAIL. A year later the vessel was renamed AKAM, and was broken up in 1972.SignificanceThis model represents MV MONGOLIA, one of the first of a new class of small to medium sized specialised motor vessels. MV MONGOLIA operated in the Australasian region after World War II, and presents an interesting maritime links between Australia and Denmark in the 20th century.
