DescriptionA black and white photograph by Graeme Andrews depicting the racing speedboat JO BLO rolling over during the Stuart Doyle Gold Cup race at Cabrita, near Sydney.HistoryThe inboard runabout hull, likely JO BLO, is shown here racing on Hen and Chicken Bay at Cabarita, near Sydney. As the boat attempts to swing around the turn buoy, possibly making 80 kilometres per hour, centrifugal force has rolled it over, outwards. The boat is now almost vertical, sideways above the water and is within a millisecond of landing upside down. The driver was thrown out and was unhurt.SignificanceThis image is part of the Graeme Andrews Collection. Andrews is an Honorary Life member of Sydney Heritage Fleet who photographed Australian shipping at his workplace and elsewhere for more than 50 years. He collected photographs and “sea-pix” from other sources, such as private snapshots going back more than 100 years.
Graeme Andrews also wrote extensively about the powerboat scene in Sydney - including documenting many of the races that took place each weekend along its waterways.
