DescriptionThis photograph depicts Royal Indian Navy officers of the sloop HMIS HINDUSTAN probably during their 1934 visit to Australia. This photograph was taken at wharf 3, East Circular Quay in Sydney after the ship arrived on 29 November. The vessel departed Sydney for Brisbane at 10:38am on 7 December. HINDUSTAN was stationed in Australian waters to act as an escort for ships attending the Victorian centenary celebrations in October 1934.HistoryHMIS HINDUSTAN was a Folkestone class sloop of the Royal Indian Navy. It was launched on 12 May 1930 and built at Wallsend-on-Tyne and Hebburn-on-Tyne, United Kingdom. HINDUSTAN was used in patrol, escort and minesweeping operations before being transferred to the Pakistan navy and renamed HMPS KARSAZ in 1948.SignificanceThe Samuel J Hood photographic collection records an extensive range of maritime activity on Sydney Harbour, including sail and steam ships, crew portraits, crews at work, ship interiors, stevedores loading and unloading cargo, port scenes, pleasure boats and harbourside social activities from the 1890s through to the 1950s. They are also highly competent artistic studies and views - Hood was regarded as an important figure in early Australian photojournalism. Hood’s maritime photographs are one of the most significant collections of such work in Australia.
