DescriptionThis is a 1:100 scale model of the SS JERVIS BAY.HistoryThe ship is displayed in a case and shown fully loaded with containers above and below deck. The starboard side is cut away to reveal the ship's containers inside. The ship is shown with a boarding companionway and a swimming pool on the after deck. SS JERVIS BAY was a 28,875 gross tonne container ship built by John Brown & Co Ltd at Govan, Scotland for Overseas Container Lines in 1969. It was initially used for the United Kingdom to Australia container ship service, with its first round voyages made in 1970. The ship was managed by Shaw Savill & Albion, being their largest cargo vessel and first container ship. In 1983 JERVIS BAY was sold and became a total loss after it went ashore at Bilboa.SignificanceThis model of the JERVIS BAY illustrates the history of late twentieth century Australian cargo shipping.
