HistoryDonor states that drill boots, known as DB's, were standard issue to cadets. Black shoes were not allowed but some cadets wore black school shoes until boots their size were available. These boots were re-soled once the original leather sole and heel started to wear out. Apparently they were very slippery to wear on bitumen parade grounds, and also the eyelets did not last very long once exposed to salt water.
