DescriptionThis engraving featured in the 7th edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica published between 1830 and 1842. The plate features eight illustrations relating to dry docks, including the entrance of a dock with a floating dam; the entrance of a dock with swinging gates; a plan and elevation of the entrance of the dock with wicket gates; a sectional elevation view of a dock; and a transverse section of a roof over the head of a double dock at Plymouth (designed by Sir R Seppings and erected in 1817). This engraving probably featured in the 7th edition ‘Encyclopaedia Britannica: A Dictionary of Arts, Sciences, and General Literature’ published in 1842.
