DescriptionThis archive series numbered [001] - [968] consists of photographs taken by amateur ferry and speed boating historian Graeme Andrews relating to inshore and offshore speedboat racing. The images depict various events including the 1972 Stuart Doyle Gold Cup and the 1975 Sydney Boat Show, as well as boating and water skiing on the Hawkesbury, Edward, Lane Cove, Crookhaven and Shoalhaven rivers, New South Wales; the Brisbane River, Queensland; Port Adelaide, South Australia; Manly Dam and Pittwater, Sydney.
A range of vessels are represented including PASSPORT, SCOTCH, NICANNE II, the Halvorsen cruiser CLIPPER 34, TUNNEL HILLS, TAYLORMAID, CAMCRAFT, BILLETS, and the shipwrecks TIME and RIP.SignificanceThis collection illustrates the boom era of speedboating in the decades after World War II. The increasing affordability and widespread use of cars, engines and the advent of mass production made speedboating affordable and the sport became a popular pastime.
