DescriptionThis archive series numbered [001] - [985] consists of black-and-white negatives taken by amateur ferry and speed boating historian Graeme Andrews depicting speed boats and hydroplanes, races, tests and other events. Some of the events include the BP Newcastle Race, O/B Pleasure Boat Championships, E C Griffith Cup, Caltex Shield, BP 100, Savage Boat Test, and Hans Tholstrup's arrival in Sydney after completing his Australian circumnavigation in 17-foot powerboat TOM THUMB. Also depicted are entrants to the Miss World competition, water skiers, sailing craft, coast passenger ships and ferries.SignificanceThis collection illustrates the boom era of speedboating in the decades after World War II. The increasing affordability and widespread use of cars, engines and the advent of mass production made speedboating affordable and the sport became a popular pastime.
